Preference for Medical Schools: Many SKY Admits Choose to Transfer π¨ In the 2025 early admissions, one out of three students admitted to Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University (SKY) declined their enrollment to pursue medical schools instead. The non-enrollment rates were especially high at Yonsei and Korea Universities, at 45.1% and 43.3%, respectively, clearly reflecting the growing preference for medical schoolsπ This trend is also affecting regional medical schools, with an increasing number of students seeking transfers to universities near the capital, raising concerns about enrollment shortagesπ Could the concentration of top students in medical schools further impact the admissions strategies of mid- and lower-ranked universities?
South Korea Successfully Launches Third Reconnaissance Satellite π°οΈ South Korea has successfully launched its third military reconnaissance satellite! Equipped with advanced SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) technology, this satellite can provide 24-hour surveillance regardless of weather conditionsπ It will operate in coordination with the first reconnaissance satellite, enhancing the precision of detecting North Korean provocationsπ‘. Next year, the fourth and fifth reconnaissance satellites are scheduled for launch, further bolstering South Korea's surveillance capabilities. With this, the country continues to solidify its independent monitoring system!
Farmers Stage Tractor Protest with Overnight Standoff π Farmers from the Korean Peasants Union drove around 30 tractors into Seoul as part of a large-scale protest. They clashed with police at Namtaeryeong Go-gae, and some tractors even made their way to the Gwanghwamun areaπ§. The protesters are demanding the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol and opposing the governmentβs veto of the Grain Management Act. Many protesters have continued an overnight sit-in in Sadang, keeping tensions high at the sceneπ. Police are reportedly focusing on managing the protest to prevent large-scale conflicts.

Election Fraud? NIS Says, 'No Problem!' β
by Editor PuffβοΈ
The National Intelligence Service (NIS) reported to the National Assembly that it found no evidence of election fraud during its security inspection of last yearβs general election.π€· This report came after President Yoon Suk Yeol raised concerns about potential election issues and suggested the possibility of election fraud.
During his presidential campaign and a later public address, President Yoon said, βHow can people trust the results if the system managing the elections is in such disarray?β He then instructed the Minister of National Defense to conduct a review of the National Election Commission (NEC)βs system. However, the NIS confirmed that while there were security issues with the NEC system, no evidence of election fraud was found.π
ββοΈ
'NEC', the National Election Commission, is a constitutional body responsible for managing elections and overseeing vote counting.π³οΈ Its system handles voter data and election information, relying heavily on IT infrastructure, especially for early voting.π₯οΈ The NIS inspection revealed that this system was vulnerable to hacking. For instance, hackers could manipulate data to mark early voters as non-voters or vice versa. This concern grew after North Korean hackers accessed confidential documents by hacking an NEC employeeβs email account.π§
After a fire at the Pangyo Data Center in 2022, the NEC conducted its own security reviews but refused external inspections, causing some controversy.βοΈ However, from May to June last year, the NEC accepted the NISβs inspection request. The NIS inspected only 5% (317 out of 6,400) of the NECβs IT devices and emphasized that it was difficult to conclusively determine election fraud based on such a limited sample.π
Following the inspection, the NIS recommended several improvements to address security vulnerabilities, which the NEC implemented earlier this year. The NIS clarified that its inspection aimed to assess the systemβs vulnerability to hacking, not to investigate actual election fraud.π§
The NEC called allegations of election fraud βbaseless claimsβ and criticized such accusations for undermining public trust in the electoral system and causing social unrest.π The NIS also warned against hastily linking security vulnerabilities to election fraud allegations, urging caution.
This review of the election systemβs security and subsequent improvements were significant steps toward restoring public trust. What are your thoughts on this matterβπ£οΈ

DEC's Korean Picks #2: A Special Christmas Market in Korea π
by Editor NaraeποΈ

A Market Full of Sights and Delights π
When you think of Christmas, European markets might come to mind. But did you know you can experience a similar festive vibe right here in Korea? Enter the 2024 Gwanghwamun Market! This winter, Gwanghwamun Square in the heart of Seoul transforms into a magical space filled with Korean touches and Christmas charm. π |
|
|
The market is divided into three main zones. My favorite was Zone 1: Santa Village, which featured a gigantic Christmas tree surrounded by adorable handmade ornaments and crafts. Each item radiated warmth and care, making even window shopping a joyful experience. Don't forget to snap a photo in front of the tree to capture the holiday spirit! πΈ |
If youβre feeling hungry, head to Zone 2: Food Street. Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), hot dogs, and traditional Christmas wagashi (sweets) were some of the treats that pleased both my eyes and taste buds. For a more interactive experience, Zone 3: Activity Plaza offers various events. I joined a DIY Christmas card-making workshop and gifted my handmade card to familyβa heartwarming experience! π¨ |
|
|
My Thoughts ποΈ It was truly special to enjoy a Christmas market in Korea, a rare experience here. The beautifully decorated market and glowing tree made me feel like I was in a fairytale. If youβre planning a trip to Seoul this holiday season, the Gwanghwamun Market is a must-visit destination. Highly recommended! π |

κ³ μ¦λνλ€ [Go-Jeu-Neok-Ha-Da]
Hello, everyone! Long time no see! π
Howβs your busy and hectic end-of-year season going? π₯° Hope youβre hanging in there! Today, letβs take a little breather and dive into a beautiful Korean word thatβs full of charm and emotion: βκ³ μ¦λνλ€β (go-jeu-neok-ha-da).
Doesnβt it just sound lovely? π€© Just saying it feels like your mind is calming down and soaking in peaceful vibes.
When is "κ³ μ¦λνλ€" the perfect word? πββοΈ
βκ³ μ¦λνλ€β isnβt just another way to say βquiet.β Thereβs something more to it. Think of these moments:
- The stillness of a mountain village.
- A starry night sky spilling with light. π
- The soft reflection of the moon on a tranquil lake. π
You know those moments where itβs not just quiet but also inexplicably comforting? Thatβs κ³ μ¦λνλ€ in a nutshell!
Examples of "κ³ μ¦λνλ€" moments
- A peaceful Sunday morning, sipping coffee by the window as birds chirp faintly in the background. β
- Sitting around a campfire, gazing at the stars, with everyone quietly lost in their own thoughts. π₯ποΈ
- Feeling the crisp and still air of dawn, sparking an unexpected wave of emotions. π
How do you say "κ³ μ¦λνλ€" in English?
If youβre wondering how to translate κ³ μ¦λνλ€, hereβs the thingβitβs tricky to find an exact match. Some close equivalents might be:
- Serene (calm and peaceful)
- Tranquil (quiet and undisturbed)
- Peaceful (free of noise and chaos)
But hereβs the catch: while these words focus on the quietness, κ³ μ¦λνλ€ goes beyond that. Itβs quiet, cozy, and even a bit sentimentalβall wrapped up into one. Itβs that subtle emotional depth that makes Korean so special, right? β€οΈ
What about you?
Have you had any κ³ μ¦λνλ€ moments recently? Or maybe you feel like you could really use one? π
Weβll be back next week with more fun and heartfelt stories. π
