Record-Breaking Heatwave in Korea! ๐๐ฅ
This summer, Korea has been grappling with an intense heatwave that is breaking records. August alone has experienced an average of 14.8 days of extreme heat, making it the second-longest heatwave period on record since 1973. ๐ฅต Unfortunately, this has resulted in significant consequences across the country. Over 1 million livestock, including pigs and chickens, have died due to the heat, and fish farms have lost more than 11 million fish. ๐๐๐
The heatwave has significantly impacted public health, with 2,994 cases of heat-related illnesses reported since June. Tragically, 28 people have lost their lives due to the extreme temperatures. ๐ This heatwave serves as a stark reminder of the escalating effects of climate change. Let's all stay safe and hydrated during these hot days! ๐ฆ
CJ Logistics, 7-Day Delivery Service ๐๐ฆ Starting next year, Korea's CJ Logistics will launch a 7-day delivery service called "Maeil One," allowing deliveries on Sundays and public holidays. Now, you can receive packages even on weekends, greatly enhancing shopping convenience. ๐
Although the service will operate seven days a week, delivery drivers will transition to a five-day workweek, improving their working conditions. The system will guarantee two consecutive days off to expand their rights to rest, and with flexible operations, the goal is to establish a five-day workweek without reducing drivers' income. This is exciting news for those with busy lives, as receiving packages will become faster and more convenient! ๐ฆ๐
North Korean elites are increasingly defecting! ๐โโ๏ธ๐ You've probably been hearing more stories about defections recently.
According to South Koreaโs Ministry of Unification, since Kim Jong-un came to power, the number of elite defections from North Korea has more than doubled compared to the time under Kim Jong-il. These elites include members of the Workers' Party, government officials, military personnel, and those in intelligence and security agencies, along with their families.
Experts suggest that this rise in defections signals internal weakening of the North Korean regime. Fatigue over three generations of power succession and growing contradictions within the system are driving high-ranking officials to flee. ๐ง
Moreover, due to COVID-19, North Korean diplomats and students who were stranded abroad have grown disillusioned with the regime and yearn for the outside world. This exposure to foreign culture has led some, especially those with families, to choose a new life. โ๏ธ
The increasing defections among elites are being watched closely as a key indicator of potential changes within North Korea's regime. The magic of โCheoseoโ fades away๐๐คทโโ๏ธโจ๏ธ
by Editor Tini๐ธ
Do you guys like summer? This summer feels hotter than ever, doesnโt it? I hope youโre all taking care of yourselves! The Korea Meteorological Administration recently announced that there wonโt be any โCheoseo magicโ this year. ๐ข
โCheoseoโ is the 14th of the 24 solar terms and literally means โthe heat retreats.โ Normally, the intense heat eases off after Cheoseo, which is why the term โCheoseo magicโ was coined. However, the Meteorological Administration predicts that even after Cheoseo(which was August 22), the daytime highs will remain well over 30ยฐC(86ยฐF), similar to peak summer temperatures, until at least the 28th. ๐ฅ
The term โCheoseo magicโ didnโt come out of nowhere. According to the Meteorological Administration, when they analyzed temperature data from the past 24 years (2000-2024), they found that in 14 times of those years, temperatures dropped noticeably after Cheoseo. The heat has been so persistent that โtropical nights,โ where the temperature doesnโt drop even after sunset, have been all over the news!
So, why has the โCheoseo magicโ disappeared this year? ๐ก๏ธ๐
Itโs mainly due to the North Pacific High. ๐ Usually, around Cheoseo, the amount of solar radiation decreases, which should lead to temperature drop. But this year, the North Pacific High is covering the sky so densely that even with less solar energy, the heat remains because of the hot, humid southwesterly winds. Also, the recent Typhoon โJongdariโ passed through. Although it was the first typhoon to affect the Korean Peninsula this year and brought a lot of rain to the central region, it didnโt cool things down. Instead, it carried the southern heat with it, keeping the weather hot and sticky. Make sure to take care of yourself and stay hydrated during this unusually hot weather! ๐๐ซ

Thing that adds specialness to the food: Son-Mat๐
์๋ง [Son-Mat]
โSon-Matโ is a unique Korean concept that refers to the special flavor or quality that comes from the personal touch and care of the person cooking.๐ณ It goes beyond just following a recipe; it's the idea that the cook's heart, experience, and hands impart a distinct taste to the dish. Son-Mat is not simply a culinary skill, but a reflection of family bonds, tradition, and warm emotional connections in Korean culture.๐ค
This concept of Son-mat is beautifully illustrated in the Korean film Little Forest.๐ณ The movie follows the story of a young woman who, feeling exhausted by city life, returns to her rural hometown.๐ฅบ There, she rediscovers the Son-Mat she learned from her mother, preparing meals using ingredients she gathers from nature. These dishes not only satisfy her hunger but also provide comfort and healing for her soul.โค๏ธโ๐ฉน Through her cooking, she reconnects with her past, her mother's legacy, and ultimately, herself. The meals she creates carry both her mother's Son-Mat and her own unique touch, symbolizing her journey of self-discovery.
|
|
|
Source: Movies Little Forest |
|
|
In this movie, Son-Mat is depicted as a medium used to convey a personโs sincerity and emotions through food.๐ค The process of gathering ingredients and adding her own Son-Mat to the meals becomes a way for the main character to rediscover the essence of life and regain her sense of self. Through the movie Little Forest, we can see that Son-Mat is not merely a technique but an important emotional element that connects oneself with others.๐ฅฐ |
