North Korean elites are increasingly defecting! 🏃‍♂️🌍
You've probably been hearing more stories about defections recently.

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Unification, since Kim Jong-un came to power, the number of elite defections from North Korea has more than doubled compared to the time under Kim Jong-il. These elites include members of the Workers' Party, government officials, military personnel, and those in intelligence and security agencies, along with their families.

Experts suggest that this rise in defections signals internal weakening of the North Korean regime. Fatigue over three generations of power succession and growing contradictions within the system are driving high-ranking officials to flee. 🧐

Moreover, due to COVID-19, North Korean diplomats and students who were stranded abroad have grown disillusioned with the regime and yearn for the outside world. This exposure to foreign culture has led some, especially those with families, to choose a new life. ✈️

The magic of ‘Cheoseo’ fades away👀🤷‍♀️♨️

Do you guys like summer? This summer feels hotter than ever, doesn’t it? I hope you’re all taking care of yourselves! The Korea Meteorological Administration recently announced that there won’t be any ‘Cheoseo magic’ this year. 📢

‘Cheoseo’ is the 14th of the 24 solar terms and literally means “the heat retreats.” Normally, the intense heat eases off after Cheoseo, which is why the term ‘Cheoseo magic’ was coined. However, the Meteorological Administration predicts that even after Cheoseo(which was August 22), the daytime highs will remain well over 30°C(86°F), similar to peak summer temperatures, until at least the 28th. 😥

The term ‘Cheoseo magic’ didn’t come out of nowhere. According to the Meteorological Administration, when they analyzed temperature data from the past 24 years (2000-2024), they found that in 14 times of those years, temperatures dropped noticeably after Cheoseo. The heat has been so persistent that ‘tropical nights,’ where the temperature doesn’t drop even after sunset, have been all over the news!

So, why has the ‘Cheoseo magic’ disappeared this year? 🌡️🌀

It’s mainly due to the North Pacific High. 🌏 Usually, around Cheoseo, the amount of solar radiation decreases, which should lead to temperature drop. But this year, the North Pacific High is covering the sky so densely that even with less solar energy, the heat remains because of the hot, humid southwesterly winds. Also, the recent Typhoon ‘Jongdari’ passed through. Although it was the first typhoon to affect the Korean Peninsula this year and brought a lot of rain to the central region, it didn’t cool things down. Instead, it carried the southern heat with it, keeping the weather hot and sticky. Make sure to take care of yourself and stay hydrated during this unusually hot weather! 🙌🫗

의미의 단어예요. 처서가 지나면 무더위가 한 풀 꺾인다는 뜻에서 ‘처서 매직’이라는 신조어를 쓰는데요. 기상청은 올해 처서(8월 22일) 이후인 28일까지도 한국의 낮 최고 기온이 한여름 수준인 30도를 훌쩍 넘을 것이라고 예상했어요. 😥
