No Future for Kimchi?๐ฑ
There have been reports that Korea's iconic fermented food, Kimchi, is facing a crisis due to climate change.๐ฅต Korean cabbage, a key ingredient in Kimchi, thrives in cooler climates but is becoming increasingly difficult to produce due to rising temperatures. The cabbage grows best in temperatures ranging from 18ยฐC (64.4ยฐF) to 21ยฐC (69.8ยฐF), but abnormal summer heat in major highland farming areas, such as Gang-won Province, is causing significant disruptions to its cultivation.๐ฅ
Recent statistics show that the area of highland Korean cabbage farms has nearly halved over the past 20 years. According to the Rural Development Administration, Korean cabbage farming could drastically decline over the next 25 years, and by 2090, highland Korean cabbage might no longer be cultivated at all.โฐ๏ธ
This situation is posing serious challenges to Korea's Kimchi culture and the entire industry. Maybe in the future, we might not be able to enjoy the locally made Kimchi.๐ข
Fastest Way to get to the top of Seoul๐๏ธ
A gondola lift is being built on Namsan in central Seoul and is scheduled to open to the public in the spring of 2026.๐ฅณ The project aims to enhance accessibility to Namsan, which is currently reachable by foot, cable cars, or shuttle buses, following the ban on diesel tourist buses in 2021 due to environmental concerns.
The gondola will span 832 meters (2,730 feet) and will transport up to 1,600 people per hour from Yejang Park to the summit of Namsan in just five minutes.โฑ๏ธ There will be 25 gondola cars, each with a capacity of 10 people, designed to accommodate people in wheelchairs and those with strollers.๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ
Construction is expected to be completed by November 2025, with a pilot ride planned for early 2026. Official operations will begin in the spring of the same year. For those who plan to visit Korea in 2026, make special memories on the gondola where you can see Seoul at a glance!๐

Citizen's victory in Asia's first climate lawsuit!๐
by Editor Dodo๐ฆค
Four years and five months after the first climate lawsuit in Korea was filed, the Constitutional Court finally ruled on August 29, 2024, that the government's climate response was unconstitutional! This is a monumental ruling, the first in Korea and the first in Asia, as it examines whether the national greenhouse gas reduction target is constitutional ๐
The court ruled that Article 8(1) of the Basic Act on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth does not provide a specific reduction target beyond 2030, which puts an undue burden on future generations. It was noted that the government did not provide any quantitative criteria for the reduction target beyond 2030, and there is no mechanism to effectively ensure gradual and continuous reduction until the goal of carbon neutrality in 2050. Therefore, the government must prepare new climate response measures by February 2026. ๐
This is the first climate constitutional challenge in South Korea, with four lawsuits filed between 2020 and 2023. The claimants argued that the government's greenhouse gas reduction targets were insufficient and violated their fundamental rights. The Constitutional Court upheld some of the claims but ruled that the current 2030 target (40% reduction from 2018) was not unconstitutional. โจ
Similarly, on April 29, 2021, the German Federal Constitutional Court ruled that Germany's climate change law was partly unconstitutional. The court found that the post-2030 GHG reduction targets were insufficient and violated the fundamental rights of future generations. The German government had until December 31, 2022, to amend the law.
Since this is the first climate constitutional court decision in Asia, it will have a huge impact on other countries ๐ A step forward for future generations, what will happen next?๐ฑ |

Koreans Canโt Drink Without Saying This: ๊ฑด๋ฐฐ! [Gunbae] ๐ฅ๐ป
๊ฑด๋ฐฐ [Gunbae]
In this weekโs Korean dictionary section, weโll be exploring a word thatโs commonly used in our daily lives: โ๊ฑด๋ฐฐโ (Gunbae). When weโre sharing drinks with friends or family, or celebrating a special occasion, we often shout "๊ฑด๋ฐฐ!" But while "๊ฑด๋ฐฐ" might seem like a simple toast, thereโs actually a deeper meaning behind it. ๐ค
The Meaning of "๊ฑด๋ฐฐ"
๊ฑด๋ฐฐ (Gunbae) comes from two Chinese characters: "๊ฑด(ไนพ)" meaning dry, and "๋ฐฐ(ๆฏ)" meaning cup. In simple terms, it means "to drink until the cup is dry." Nowadays, itโs used as a toast to celebrate or wish for good things when people raise their glasses together. But the cultural significance of "๊ฑด๋ฐฐ" goes beyond just the words. ๐คฉ Clinking glasses and making eye contact is a way to acknowledge and share the moment with others. Thatโs why youโll hear "๊ฑด๋ฐฐ!" not just at casual drinking gatherings, but also at important events like weddings or birthday parties to wish for happiness and good fortune. ๐ฅ
How Do You Say It in Other Languages?
Many countries have similar toasts to "๊ฑด๋ฐฐ." Although the words may differ, the sentiment of wishing for a good time together remains the same. ๐
- In English, people say "Cheers!" Itโs a light-hearted way to toast at parties or gatherings with friends.
- In French, itโs "Santรฉ!" This word literally means "health," so itโs a way to toast to each otherโs well-being.
- In Japanese, they say "ไนพๆฏ (Kanpai)." Itโs almost identical in meaning to "๊ฑด๋ฐฐ," used for raising a glass in celebration at happy occasions.
Next time youโre at a gathering, donโt forget to shout "๊ฑด๋ฐฐ!" and enjoy the warm moments with your loved ones. ๐ฅฐ
