Love Knows No Gender! Same-Sex Couples Fight for Marriage Equality๐ณ๏ธโ๐
On the 10th, a press conference was held to kick off the "Lawsuit for Marriage Equality and Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage"! ๐ฒ At the event, 11 same-sex couples announced that, they would file lawsuits at six different courts across the country, challenging the rejection of their marriage registrations and seeking a constitutional review of the law that currently bars same-sex marriages.๐
So, why did they start this marriage equality lawsuit? Itโs because same-sex relationships still struggle to be recognized under Koreaโs legal system.๐ขWhile same-sex marriage is not yet legal in Korea, there actually isn't any specific law prohibiting it. In fact, thereโs no clause in the current law that directly bans same-sex marriage!
Despite this, when same-sex couples try to register their marriages, district offices don't process their applications. The reason?๐ง Itโs largely due to the courtsโ interpretation of the law. Right now, Korean courts still define marriage as a "union between a man and a woman, based on love, for the purpose of a lifelong partnership."
But thereโs hope!โค๏ธโ๐ฅ The Constitutional Courtโs 2017 research report on the constitutional guarantee of marriage stated that "in todayโs world, marriage can be understood as two people forming a partnership based on love and trust, united by their own free will." So, it seems Korea is slowly opening up to more diverse forms of marriage.
Will this lawsuit pave the way for the legalization of same-sex marriage in Korea? Weโll have to wait and see!๐
Semiconductor Crisis? Can 3-Step Strategy Save Samsung?๐ฑ
Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division head, DS Vice Chairman Jun Young-hyun, made an unusual move on October 8, issuing a public apology right after the companyโs third-quarter earnings report.๐ฒ He apologized to shareholders for the current crisis, particularly the recent drop in stock prices and disappointing performance. What's interesting is that only head of the DS (Device Solutions) division, made the apology, while the head of the DX (Device Experience) division, which handles the home appliances and mobile sectors, did not. This has led to various interpretations, with many believing this clarifies that the current struggles at Samsung are rooted in the semiconductor division.๐
Looking at Samsung's third-quarter provisional earnings, the company reported sales of 79 trillion KRW and an operating profit of 9.1 trillion KRW.๐ธ While sales were up 7% compared to the previous quarter, operating profit dropped by 13%.๐This figure fell significantly below market expectations, which had forecasted an operating profit of around 10.77 trillion KRW. Many securities firms had initially predicted operating profits of around 13 to 14 trillion KRW, but had sharply lowered their estimates starting last month. Even with these revised expectations, the actual performance failed to meet them.๐โโ๏ธ
In his public statement, Vice Chairman Jun outlined three key strategies to overcome this crisis: 1. Restoring core technological competitiveness, 2. Thoroughly preparing for the future, and 3. Innovating the corporate culture and work methods.
Will 3 solutions be enough to pull Samsung through this challenging time?๐ซฃ

Han Kang, First Asian Woman to Win the Nobel Prize in Literature! ๐๐
by Editor Narae๐๏ธ
In an incredible achievement, Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature, becoming the first Asian woman and the first Korean ever to receive this prestigious honor. She now joins Kim Dae-jung, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000, as only the second South Korean Nobel laureate. ๐โ๏ธ
Han Kang has been praised for her powerful exploration of human suffering, trauma, and resilience through her deeply reflective works. Her acclaimed novel, "The Vegetarian", delves into the complexities of human desire and violence, drawing international recognition. It became the first Korean work to win the Man Booker International Prize in 2016, and now, with this Nobel win, her literary journey reaches an extraordinary new milestone. ๐โจ
The Swedish Academy commended Han Kang for her โintense poetic prose that confronts historical trauma and reveals the fragility of human existence.โ The Nobel Committee described her writing as profound and original, offering readers around the world a striking message of hope, suffering, and reflection. In her acceptance speech, Han expressed deep gratitude and acknowledged her lifelong connection to Korean literature, which has been a guiding force in her work. ๐ฑ
This recognition is a crucial moment for Korean literature, further propelling it into the global spotlight. Han Kangโs other significant works, such as "Human Acts", which addresses the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, and "The White Book", which does the Jeju April 3 massacre, are essential reads for understanding Koreaโs history and its impact on the human condition. Why not dive into one of her books this fall? ๐๐

Korean Dictionary by Editor Tini๐ธ
์์ธํธ๋ [Soul Food]:
Today, let's talk about "soul food." ๐ You might find it a bit curious to see an English word in a Korean dictionary! The term "soul food" is one of those Konglish(Korean+English) expressions that are commonly used in Korea. In English, "soul food" traditionally refers to African American cuisine from the southern United States.
In Korea, though, the meaning is slightly different. ๐ Here, "soul food" refers to any food that brings you emotional comfort or lifts your spirits. It's the kind of food that makes you feel at ease and puts you in a good mood. ๐ค For example, dishes youโve enjoyed since childhood, or your personal favorites could be considered your โsoul food.โ Think of things like ๋ก๋ณถ์ด (tteokbokki), which you might have enjoyed with friends during your school days, or your momโs ๊น์น์ฐ๊ฐ (kimchi stew) simmering away with that comforting bubble bubble sound on a cold day. It could also be the food you crave when youโre feeling nostalgic or far from home, especially if youโre living abroad. |
|
|
So, in Korea, โsoul foodโ is less about a specific type of cuisine and more about the deep connection you have with certain foods that evoke personal memories or emotions.
Now, what about in English-speaking countries? ๐ค The closest concept would be "comfort food." Comfort food is, as the name suggests, food that gives you a sense of comfort, often tied to childhood memories or a feeling of emotional warmth. For Americans, it might be something like spaghetti their parents used to make or freshly baked cookies from home. ๐๐ช
In summary, "soul food" in Korea is all about food that's tied to personal memories and emotions, whereas in English-speaking countries, this is often referred to as "comfort food." On the other hand, in English, "soul food" specifically refers to traditional African American dishes like fried chicken or cornbread.
So, what's your soul food? ๐
