No-Sail Zone Again โ Korea Voices Concern ๐ข
Tensions are rising again between South Korea and China over the Yellow Sea. โ๏ธ
Recently, China unilaterally set up no-sail zones in the Korea-China Provisional Measures Zone (PMZ) โ an area where maritime borders between the two countries are still unclear. These zones seem to hint at military drills, and China didnโt consult South Korea in advance. Instead, the announcement came from a regional branch of Chinaโs maritime agency, and the news was even broken by Newsweek, not the Chinese government itself.
Technically, drills in international waters like the PMZ arenโt illegal if a notice is given. But Korea is upset that China limited freedom of navigation in a sensitive area without any consultation, especially right after illegally installing oil rig-like structures there last year.
Analysts say this kind of tit-for-tat is part of Chinaโs โgray zoneโ strategy - provocative but non-military moves to quietly increase its influence.
Experts believe this could be part of Chinaโs โsalami tacticโ - slowly expanding control, piece by piece.โ๏ธ Some think China is taking advantage of Koreaโs political transition period, with only an acting president in place.
For now, Korea is being cautious, continuing to ask China to take down the structures while considering its own countermeasures like building similar facilities or conducting joint inspections.
North Korea Reveals Major Naval Setback at Chongjin Shipyard โ
A newly unveiled 5,000-ton North Korean destroyer capsized during its launch ceremony at Chongjin Shipyard, with leader Kim Jong-un in attendance. The stern slid into the water while the bow remained stuck, causing the ship to tilt and fall onto its side.๐ข
North Koreaโs state media blamed the mishap on โincompetence and unscientific practices,โ and Kim condemned it as a โpolitical failureโ that damaged the dignity of the state. He vowed disciplinary action at the upcoming Workersโ Party plenary session in June.
In a rare move, North Korea promptly disclosed the incident, likely due to international satellite monitoring. On the same day, the country launched cruise missiles, which observers see as a diversionary show of strength.
Though the vessel may be recoverable, the incident raises broader questions about Pyongyangโs rush for prestige over precision.
